Why we track this

Two scrapyards on Reno Avenue, Derichebourg Recycling and Standard Iron and Metal, sit just outside the JFK neighborhood. When cars go through their shredders with gas still in the tank, an airbag inside, or a missed propane tank, the blast shakes homes blocks away. Neighbors have reported cracked walls and ceilings and fires that foul the air, and they've been complaining to the city since the early 1990s.

We log every explosion we can so the community, the city, and our council member can see how often it really happens.

Background from NonDoc, March 21, 2025. More coverage on In the news.

* The real number is higher. This is what a small group of neighbors has been able to log. Some of the tracking team work during the day, and others are retired and travel, so not every explosion has been recorded. For years, the City Action Center told the neighborhood it was tracking the explosions when it was not.

Explosions logged by JFK neighbors since March 2011. Odor-only reports are not counted as explosions.
